Joe Henry is one of those artists you are rarely able to find nowadays. He is passionate about his work, unbelievably talented in multiple ways and a grand singer-songwriter, not to forget a Grammy award winning producer. The prolific singer has been reshaping the definition of American folk music. Adored for his wise and thoughtful lyrics and music, he always manages to find the right words and right tunes. Not only is Joe Henry a successful musician, but he also produced albums for artists ranging from Solomon Burke (Grammy Award!), Hugh Laurie, Aimee Mann, Rodney Crowell to Elvis Costello.

�All The Eye Can See� was mainly self-recorded at Joe Henry�s home during a phase of worldwide lockdowns. Henry: �I assumed as I began this process that, owing to circumstances, I would be making the most skeletal album of my career; when in fact, I have in many ways made my most expansive record to date.�

On �All The Eye Can See�, Henry is joined by more than 20 musicians, among them his trusted long-time musical companions and friends � Levon Henry on saxophone & clarinet, David Piltch on bass, Patrick Warren on piano & keys and John Smith on acoustic guitar.

It is an intimate album, highly emotional, amazingly quiet, beautiful, and relaxed, with simple yet skillful tunes, touching lyrics featuring 12 new and unforgettable songs, framed by an instrumental prelude and prologue.

While Black influences are inextricably intertwined with the formation of the genre, there is a very short list of Black country performers who made a splash on the national charts or the public consciousness in the 20th century. After winning the 1974 "Trucker's Jamboree" at the Hollywood Palladium, Inglewood California firefighter Howdy Glenn began a recording career that not only gained him regional hits on an independent label, but found him appearing to rapturous crowds whenever and wherever he performed live. After singing at the Academy of Country Music's general meeting, he was signed to Warner Bros. Records by Andy Wickham (who had also signed Joni Mitchell, Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris, Buck Owens, and more). Warner Bros. Released his first Wickham-produced single in 1977. His second, a cover of Willie Nelson's "Touch Me," spent six weeks on the charts. Glenn headlined at Gilley's in Pasadena, Texas, and found himself nominated for the ACM's Top New Male Vocalist award. It appeared as though country music had a possible new star on the rise. But, as happens inexplicably for some artists, after a few singles, and more material left in the can, a new album from "The Singing Fireman" (as he was dubbed by Warner Bros.) never materialized. Glenn's early singles were compiled on the Indian Head label LP I Can Almost See Houston, and he recorded another single, released on his own Fire Records imprint. Both failed to land further success, and Glenn continued on with his career in firefighting. I Can Almost See Houston: The Complete Howdy Glenn collects all the recordings and reexamines the importance and legacy of Howdy Glenn. Containing all 8 of his singles, plus 6 newly mixed, previously unissued tracks from the Warner Bros. #vaults, plus an outtake from his Fire Records sessions, this 23-track collection was Produced for release by Grammy� nominee Scott B. Bomar (The Bakersfield Sound) and Grammy� winner Cheryl Pawelski (Hank Williams - The Garden Spot Programs, 1950). With Restoration and Mastering by Grammy� winner Michael Graves, the packaging contains photos, ephemera, and new liner notes from Bomar, outlining not only a brief history of Black artists in country music, but Howdy Glenn's rightful place in the story.

Joshua Hedley is �a singing professor of country & western,� he declares on his raucous and witty new album, Neon Blue. It might sound like a punchline, but it�s not. An ace fiddle player, a sharp guitarist, and a singer with a granite twang, he�s devoted his entire life to the study of this genre. Ask him about it and he�ll explain: �When all my friends went off to college, I went to Nashville. I was 19 years old playing honkytonks and getting an education.� His 2018 debut, Mr. Jukebox, showcased his deep knowledge of country�s history, in particular the beery ballads of the 1950s and �60s. His mentors were George Jones, Ray Price, and Glen Campbell, but his most remarkable accomplishment was putting his own spin on their style.

Neon Blue, on the other hand, examines a very different, often forsaken era: the early 1990s. �The last bastion of country music,� says the professor, �was the early 1990s, roughly 1989 and 1996. You could turn on the radio and immediately know you�re hearing a country song. You could still hear steel guitar and fiddle. But there was a hard fork around 1996 or �97, when country veered off into pop territory. Neon Blue asks, What if that fork had never happened? What if country kept on sounding like country?�

That era may have been dismissed by traditionalists at the time as slick or overproduced, but Hedley finds something exciting in that old hat-act sound, and Neon Blue plays up the excitement of bigger-than-life choruses, the relatable emotions of those sad-eyed ballads, and the inventiveness of the lively production. �The sound is modern,� he says, �but it�s still discernibly country.�

Acclaimed singer, songwriter and musician Molly�Tuttle will release her anticipated Nonesuch Records debut, Crooked Tree, April 1 (on CD and digital. LP will be May 13) with her new bluegrass collective Golden Highway.

Recorded live at Nashville�s Oceanway Studios, Crooked Tree was produced by Tuttle and Jerry Douglas and features collaborations with Sierra Hull, Old Crow Medicine Show, Margo Price, Billy Strings, Dan Tyminski and Gillian Welch. The album explores Tuttle�s love of bluegrass, which she discovered through her father, a music teacher and multi-instrumentalist, and her grandfather, a banjo player. Across these thirteen tracks, all of which were written/co-written by Tuttle, she honors the bluegrass tradition while also pushing the genre in new directions. �

�I always knew I wanted to make a bluegrass record someday,� Tuttle says. �Once I started writing, everything flowed so easily: sometimes�I�ve felt an internal pressure to come up with a sound no one�s heard before, but this time my intention was just to make an album that reflected the music that�s been passed down through generations in my family. I found a way to do that while writing songs that feel true to who I am, and it really helped me to grow as a songwriter.�
